Air India is a Delhi based airline that is state owned and is administered by the civil aviation ministry of India. It was initially founded by J.R.D Tata in 1932 as Tata Airlines and continued so until the end of the Second World War after which it was nationalized and renamed as Air India. It came into existence due to the government’s initiative of nationalizing air travel. Along with Indian airlines, it was the national carrier until early 2007 when both the carriers were merged to carve out Air India. Its main hub is the Indira Gandhi international airport in New Delhi. The carrier has annual revenues of more than $1billion.

It has an impressive fleet of all Airbus A320, operating completely on the airbus fleet- making it the world’s largest operator of Airbuses. Air India has flights to 25 international destinations and has agreements of code sharing with various other key international carriers. In 2010, it is expected to join the ranks of Star Alliance, the largest airlines alliance in the world. Its Maharaja lounge is very famous and is provided to the business and first class passengers.

The carrier has the distinction of winning the best international west bound airline out of India for three successive years by Galileo express travel world award for three successive years.
